Field Recordings ~ Vol. 2: One-two, Zero-one, Toil to the Beat
Field Recordings is a series of self-published mixtapes, part of Songs of Flax, a research project by Liza Prins and Marie Ilse Bourlanges
July 2024
Field Recordings is a series of mixtapes that explores the radical potential of (work) song practices. The three volumes in Field Recordings build on archival and reinterpreted material, in the full confidence that people have always and everywhere rejected their marginalized positions, and that they have always and everywhere had a political imagination at least as developed as our own. For centuries, people have been escaping into (songs full of) love and desire to forget about a tough workday; for centuries, this escapism has also contained or mutated into (songs of) political consciousness. This second volume contains 18 carefully selected excerpts of conversations and songs that provide space to listen to labor rhythms and their rendering in music from working class folk. Not every thing on this mixtape is fugitive, but there are moments when the songs and rhythms become something other than what supports assembly-line and capital.
every [one who] is not fugitive is lost.
